When the internet was young, it was a wild, vibrant and interesting place filled with possibilities. It was ugly, unwieldy, full of dead links and you had to know your way to find anything. But if you did, you could find anything as the great Fravia taught us. No one owned the internet. It was based on open protocols and decentralised servers.

Times changed and the internet commercialised. Companies grew bigger and they started centralizing. They told us this was the future and the future is inevitable. Access became more easy and convenient. And as they grew bigger and more powerful, competition became less until it came to a point where they realised they no longer had to cater to the needs of their audiences. In fact it was better for them if they didn't.

Thus the 💩enshittification of the internet began. In true Orwellian fashion the tech-billionaires that own these companies called the centralization of wealth and power the democratization of the economy. That's newspeak for you. But guess what, as an essay I read recently, points out. The internet is still based on the same protocols that have been around for ages. All these big companies do is glue a small commercial top-layer on top of the same foundations we all use.
